Sawgrass Miami Mills Outlet stores

Sawgrass Miami Mills Outlet stores

Everybody loves outlet stores; they give you the quality product without having to max out your credit cards due to the elevated prices (well… at least most of the time!). Many people have often wondered where and when this wonderful idea came into being. Miami Sawgrass Shuttle Mall is the sixth largest mall in the US alone, not to count the many outlets all over the world.

A factory outlet or outlet store is defined as a brick and mortar or online retail store where many manufacturers can sell their merchandise straight to the public. Retail is defined as the sale of product or service from businesses or certain individuals to the “end-user”.

Originally and traditionally, a “factory outlet” was store that was attached to a factory, thus allowing, the customers to watch the production process (like in the original L.L. Bean store). In “modern times” outlet stores are manufacturer brand stores like Gap and are usually grouped together in outlet malls like Miami Sawgrass Shuttle Mills mall.

Outlet History

Outlet malls first appeared in United States, around the 1930’s. Damaged or excess goods were offered to many employees at a low price, after sometime the surplus of damaged or excess goods began to reach the public and the factories soon expanded to non-employees as well. Anderson-Little (a brand specific to men’s clothing) opened an outlet in 1936 but until the 1970’s the main purpose of many outlet stores was to dispose of excess or damaged product.

In Reading, Pennsylvania, Vanity Fair opened up the first multi-store outlet center in 1974. Through the years outlet malls have gradually been increasing and experiencing sizeable growth; the average outlet mall opens with between 100,000 to 200,000 square feet of retail space; over time this can gradually expand to up to 500,000 to 600,000 feet. On average an outlet mall covers an area of around 216,000 square feet.  In 2003 surveys showed that from 260 stores nationwide, outlet malls were generating around $15 billion in revenue.

From 1991 to 1997 the number of outlets have increased from 276 to 325. Fortunately for everyone around the globe, outlet malls are not exclusively an “American phenomena” such as Miami Sawgrass Mills. For example, in Europe, retailer BAA McArthurGlen, has 13 malls and over 1200 stores in a 3 million square foot retail space. In Japan stores have also been popping up since the mid 1990’s.

There have been many studies and surveys on outlets and it has been discovered that a large portion of people who shop at the outlet malls, are women. 42 percent are college graduates, and 62 percent are people under 50.
